Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that Dr. Gregory places inside your mouth to support natural-looking prosthetics, such as crowns. A crown is a protective cap that can either restore a damaged tooth or be securely attached to an implant to replace a missing tooth.

Epidemiological studies show that more than 178 million Americans are missing at least one tooth, while 40 million are missing all of their teeth. Implants are the premier tooth replacement option because they limit the slipping, sliding, or shifting around of prosthetic teeth. With implants, your replacement teeth have the same type of support system as natural teeth.

How does the procedure for dental implants work?

Getting dental implants requires at least two in-office visits with Dr. Gregory. Initially, Dr. Gregory conducts an evaluation to make sure you’re an ideal candidate for dental implants.

During the oral surgery procedure to place your dental implants, Dr. Gregory uses a local anesthetic to make sure you’re comfortable. He uses a special dental drill to surgically place the titanium post into your jawbone.

Your jawbone needs at least a few months to heal and allow the implant to naturally fuse with the bone in the area. Essentially, the implant becomes a part of your jawbone. Once you’ve completely healed, you’ll return for another visit with Dr. Gregory.

At your follow up, Dr. Gregory attaches your prosthetic, perhaps a porcelain crown, to your implant. This final step is what fully restores your smile. Your prosthetic will closely mirror the look, feel, and function of your natural teeth.

Approved and tested implant systems are very successful. In fact, some have lasted more than 20 years with a better than 90% success rate. Patients who have good oral hygiene and take care of their new teeth can enjoy implants that last a lifetime.

Are dental implants right for me?

If you’re looking to replace any missing teeth, Dr. Gregory initially consults with you to see if dental implants are the best choice for you. Ideal candidates have a strong, healthy jawbone that can support implants. If your jawbone is too weak, there are grafting procedures available to strengthen and bolster the jawbone.

Dr. Gregory offers affordable options for both implants and crowns. He’s a firm believer that costs shouldn’t prevent anyone from achieving their dream smile.
