Tooth Whitening Q & A

What causes yellow teeth?

It’s hard to feel confident when your smile looks dull and yellow. If your teeth don’t look as bright and white as they once did, there are certain factors and lifestyle habits that may be causing your yellow teeth, such as:

Diet

Tooth-staining foods and drinks like red wine, coffee and tea, dark berries and fruits, chocolate, and sugary soda can erode your enamel and cause tooth discoloration.

Tobacco

The tar and nicotine in cigarettes and chewing tobacco can give your teeth a yellow or brown appearance over time.

Genetics

If you religiously brush and floss, limit your intake of tooth-staining foods and drinks, and avoid tobacco, then your tooth discoloration may be genetic. Some people simply have thinner enamel than others, which exposes the dark dentin underneath.

Illness

Certain medications, including those for high blood pressure, asthma, and cancer treatments, can change the color of your teeth.

Oral hygiene

Plaque and bacteria buildup on your teeth can cause them to look dull and yellow. That’s why it’s important to brush and floss twice a day.

Can anybody have professional tooth whitening?

If you opt for in-office tooth whitening, Dr. Gregory recommends coming in for a full dental exam first. This gives him the opportunity to rule out any underlying conditions as the cause of your tooth discoloration.

At this initial appointment, Dr. Gregory also uses highly accurate digital X-rays to determine where your fillings, crowns, and other dental restorations are, as these won’t whiten.

Nearly any adult is a good candidate for tooth whitening. However, this treatment is not recommended to those with extremely sensitive teeth, periodontal disease, or oral cancer, which is why Dr. Gregory always examines your teeth before he begins the whitening process.

How does tooth whitening work?

Dr. Gregory and his team use the KöR whitening system to whiten teeth. This treatment, which can brighten your teeth by up to 10 shades, works by restoring your teeth’s ability to absorb oxygen. The oxygen from the KöR bleaching gel is then absorbed deeply into the tooth, dissolving stain molecules for a brighter, whiter smile that you’ll love to show off.

Unlike alternative whitening systems, KöR is gentle on sensitive teeth. As a result, most patients experience little to no tooth sensitivity when undergoing a KöR whitening treatment.

Because KöR removes several years’ worth of stains from your teeth, you can easily maintain your bright, white smile with proper brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings for up to two years after your initial treatment. If your tooth stains do begin to build up over time, Dr. Gregory offers routine touch-up treatments to keep your smile as white as possible.
