Porcelain Veneers Q & A

What is a veneer?

A veneer is a wafer-thin piece of porcelain that bonds to your tooth to cover imperfections and restore its color, size, or shape. They’re an easy way to transform your teeth, and are often recommended if you want that “Hollywood smile.”

How can porcelain veneers improve my smile?

Porcelain veneers are an excellent option for changing the shape, color, size, or length of your teeth without undergoing extensive dental work. There are many reasons Dr. Gregory may recommend porcelain veneers to enhance your smile, but the most common are to:

  • Hide chips or cracks in teeth
  • Cover severe tooth discoloration
  • Restore misshapen teeth
  • Protect teeth that have been worn down by grinding
  • Hide large gaps between teeth
  • Lengthen short teeth
  • Hide a gummy smile

These stain-resistant veneers are especially helpful if you have discolored teeth that haven’t responded to tooth-whitening techniques. Porcelain veneers instantly give you the bright, white smile of your dreams.

How are veneers placed?

Much like dental crowns, placing porcelain veneers is typically a two-visit process. At your first appointment, Dr. Gregory evaluates your smile to determine where to place the veneers. He even offers diagnostic templates that allow you to see exactly how porcelain veneers will change your smile.

Dr. Gregory then takes detailed digital X-rays and removes a very small amount of enamel from your tooth to make room for the veneer. This ensures the veneer looks natural, rather than bulky or out of place.

Once your tooth is fully prepared, Dr. Gregory takes highly accurate impressions of your teeth to create your custom-made porcelain veneer. Fabricating a veneer typically takes around two weeks, so Dr. Gregory may fit you for a temporary crown before you leave the office.

At your final appointment, Dr. Gregory removes the temporary crown and places the permanent restoration. He wants to make sure the veneer blends in naturally with your teeth, so he’ll place it temporarily to examine its fit, shape, and shade.

Dr. Gregory may trim and reshape the veneer as needed to ensure it looks and feels perfect. Once the shape and color are adjusted, he cleans and polishes your tooth to provide a clean surface for the veneer. Finally, Dr. Gregory cements the veneer in place.
